My impressions and review:

Kurogane Communcation is a good idea on paper, but in this case it’s execution as an anime is flawed. The story is about a little girl named Haruka who is the last human being on Earth. Supposedly there was a huge war among all nations of the world and everyone got wiped out. The only beings that remain are good robots (used for service work like cooking, cleaning, information, etc) and bad robots (the military type). Haruka lives with a few good robots that take care of her and they become like family. In constrast, the bad robots try to kill Haruka as that is their function. Haruka and her gang of robots live in constant turmoil because of the inevitable circumstances that present themselves.

The show tries to hook its viewers with a simple dark past and a dark future since Haruka must live all alone in the world and find meaning in her existence. However, the intensity of the feelings and thoughts that Haruka protrays is lacking. This is a missed opportunity in my view because the setting is great for a very sad psychological drama of being all alone in the world. Instead the character’s live happily with their carefree attitudes and typical light shoujo comedy and issues. You won’t feel sad for the main character, you won’t laugh at any particular situation, and you definately won’t care about the science fiction or mecha aspects of the show. This creates a stale show with nothing that can save it.

The robots themselves range from dull to annoying to slightly badass. I kind of like Angela because she looks like Motoko from Ghost in the Shell and fights against the bad robots really well. I can’t think of anything really positive beyond that. There’s nothing to be gained emotionally from this anime and I’m not feeling anything that makes me want to continue all the way to its end. I think its safe to say you can avoid this one.

I actually liked Kurogane Communication, but I think your enjoyment of the series depends on what you’re looking for. You’re right that there’s not a lot of angst, but I’m not a fan of watching characters go overly emo, and as a feel-good series it worked well for me. Haruka doesn’t go crazy over her situation mainly because the robots are there to support her as her surrogate family, and while Trigger’s more irritating than comic relief I liked the rest of the cast and how they look out for her like a real family would. For me the weakest part was the last third of the series, since the new characters that get introduced then weren’t as likeable as Haruka-tachi for me–so if you didn’t like Haruka, Cleric, Reeves, and the rest it’s probably just as well you dropped it.

Well I’m a bit of an emo fanboy, but you make a compelling argument. I’ve enjoyed a few “happy” anime, but when I read the description to this show I instantly thought of a dark roller coaster ride through the mind of the last person alive. That definitely skewed my reception so a lot of my hard feelings is my fault.

Still yet, a show about the destruction of mankind should not be without its proper doom and gloom ^^.

I can’t believe the last third remixes the whole formula again…now that just reeks of laziness.

The last third really gets into the meat of the plot, and into whether Haruka is REALLY the last person alive on Earth or not. But the new characters that get introduced weren’t as interesting for me (in some cases their motives weren’t well defined, which just smacked of lazy writing), so I actually liked the more ‘everyday life after WWIII’ first part of the series better. Of course, I also liked Yokohama Shopping Log, and YKK is like taking Kurogane Communication and completely removing any plot or action.

If you went into it looking for doom and gloom though, you’re right, it’s anything but–I always thought a feel-good post-apocalyptic series would be an oxymoron, but that’s really what this is. Personally, if I want doom and gloom these days I just read the newspaper, so I’m partial to more happy series like this ^^
