For those of us that don’t really care we’ll get swept into the pace of any particularly good anime regardless of what type of audience it’s intended for. Bokura ga Ita, being an excellent shoujo anime, is a good example of this. The heartwarming love between a regular girl and a regular guy in high school can be as effective on guys as it is on girls. For this reason Bokura ga Ita becomes one of the better shoujo anime I’ve been able to like from start to finish.
One of the first things I need to mention about Bokura ga Ita is its animation, which frankly, is a disaster. The reason is simply because it hardly animates. In addition to that the art has a striking style that has that “love it or hate it” vibe. As the scenes unfold in video form, much of the intentions of the pages in the manga are retained. In other words, when you’re watching Bokura ga Ita it’s almost like flipping through volumes of manga with voice-overs, sound effects, and music instead of reading. To be honest I don’t have a problem with this because it’s still effective at what it wants to do most, but many people take lack of animation seriously. It can be a barrier when trying to get sucked in the show, but if you can look past it there’s lots to be enjoyed.
The story starts off with Nanami Takahashi who one day begins her first year of high school. She’s hopeful of a good thorough experience even though she’s completely new and has no friends yet. She successfully mingles with a few people and learns that a really popular guy is in her class. The guy is Yano Motoharu, known for his striking personality and his handsome features which turn him into a chick magnet. Little did Takahashi know that she would meet Motoharu for the first time in the hallway and know exactly who he was without him ever telling her his name.
Typical as it may be, as time goes by Takahashi is involved in things that put her in direct proximity to Motoharu constantly. Her strange ways of thinking and pursuing things has her thinking and obsessing over Motoharu until there’s finally a path paved for them to walk across together. Rather than cling to each other like everyday companions, Motoharu and Takashi take things a little more seriously and truly devote themselves in heart and soul to reach happiness together. However, as in most shoujo anime, there’s lots of cracks on their path they’ll constantly trip over. Motoharu himself carries with him a burden of overwhelming proportions that completely changed his life. Although he’s perceived as calm, cool, and collected in most other peoples’ eyes, he’s actually surrounded by guilt and sorrow of an event long ago. This eventually reaches Takahashi who, being the way she is, ends up creating a turmoil of mixed feelings that hinder progress of a beautiful relationship. It’s one of those “love hurts” situations caused by uncontrollable circumstances that become like unbreakable thorns in their feelings. As much as you’ll agree with one side, the other side has an equally compelling argument that throws you off balance. I certainly applaud the story because sometimes you can’t help but feel torn between what’s right and what’s wrong.
Although the story revolves around Takahashi and Motoharu, there’s plenty to go around. There’s also Yamamoto Yuri, an old acquaintance from Motoharu’s middle school who is in Takahashi and Motoharu’s class. Then there’s Motoharu’s best friend since 6th grade, Masafumi Takeuchi, whom also takes part in the story. Typical things will happen with this mix of characters if you want to take a few guesses, but as a shoujo drama it is to be expected. However, it’s the way things unfold that counts and I have no complaints as far as originality and execution are concerned. The love between the characters is genuine, an attribute I consider very important. There’s no doubt that these characters are in love and their feelings are communicated in happiness and in suffering.
The end of Bokura ga Ita is satisfactory in my view, but there’s no doubt that there could have been much much more. The good news is that the manga ends almost exactly the same as the anime, and there’s more story coming since the manga is still being serialized. If the manga continues to be as engrossing as it has been continuing 3 years after the end of Bokura ga Ita, I’d love a new anime season with a more fleshed out end. Since Bokura ga Ita is such a popular shoujo manga among girls in japan, I’d be willing to bet on the certainty that there is demand and interest to continue the TV series in the future. For those of you on the fence still, it’s great! Go watch it!

Oh my! XD I love this anime ^_^
I think you wrote a really nice review about it.
I hope they have a next season to the anime too, and I wish to see the manga at least if they won’t make another season. ^,^
I love Bokura ga Ita. ^_^
I didn’t expect much of it when I first began watching it, I was just bored and in the mood for some fluffy shoujo. However, it’s quickly become one of my favorite anime! Great review–I agreed with a lot of your points. =]
what happenes at the end of the manga
this is the best shoujo anime i have ever seen hope that it has season 2!!
the most part i love the most was the story itself!!
I love this anime. I r eally like the art because its like watercolor but the anime is good. Im just mad because its hard for Takahashi and Motoharu to get along so well. There are so many problems. This is a dramatic anime. I love it so much!
hi, im leaving a random comment.
i’m there with you. i didn’t expect much out of this anime. i was seriously just bored and wanted to see something fluffy. what i really was in the mood for was something that would make me ache in pain because of all the drama and whatnot going on.
I reallllly enjoyed it! one of my all time favorites. yes, there is talk about another season once more volumes are added.
currently 11 out right? 12 might come soon i think.
i didn’t get to read volumes 9-11. or wherever the anime ends off (volume 8 right? does this mean it ends at the end of volume 8 or beginning?).
does anyone have translations for these volumes? thanks.
The FIRST 2 seconds I saw this, it looked just like Lovely Complex, and I am in love with that anime, so it lured me to Bokura ga Ita, and it’s an amazing anime
I cried.. a lot, haha
at first it looked like lovely complex to me. i love lovely complex and bokura ga ita. i wish they will make another season of bokura ga ita.its so sad at the end. T_T

BUT ITS OK !!!
I JUST HOPE THAT THERE IS A CONTINUATION OF THIS ANIME!!!

I cryed my eyes out when I saw this one! I`m dying for more!!!!!
I agree with alot of the things u said about this anime. Especially that this a better shoujo then most. The ones i’ve seen are usually typical.. sugar coated relationships… or a utterly tragic one.
This was more realistic. It showed that relationships are not as simple as they seem. That gf’s and bf’s dont always understand eachother.. that alot goes into keeping a relationship together.. That there are feelings happiness.. fustration.. sadness.. anger.. confusion.. where at times u cry.. laugh.. smile.. and feel helpess and confused.. and that not being able to be with the one u love is not the end of the world.
To tell u the truth i think the ending was perfect. I would have made the same decision as Yano. Most high school relationships dont last forever anymore.. but a couple do. The ending leaves a door open to many possible outcomes for yano and nanami. The last episode gives the audience hope that they may be able to meet again and stay together forever… – like me!
I rate this anime 10/10! (^_^) – for graphics.. characters.. music.. and best of all.. storyline
I’m fairly new to Romance Anime, and I was completely suprised by how into this anime I got. As a mid 20’s male, I was especially thrown that an anime written primarily for 13-18yo girls would be something I would get into so much. But the story does by far the best job of any anime I’ve seen of being at once both touching and warming, and completely heartwrenching to the point that I actually cried quite a bit while watching it. I hope they do another season, but get a bigger budget and better animation.
Its really too bad that many people will rate this anime low or not even give it a shot due to the animation, the art is pretty warm and fits the mood well usually, its just so poorly animated and there are too many cheap and reused scenes. Its really too bad because the story and writing are amazing, and the music is some of the best of any anime I’ve seen yet, in terms of just fitting the scenes perfectly and lifting them up.
I totally agree with baby-love. That’s how love is. The ending is the most realistic, and I didn’t feel like anything was missing. Although I hope for a second season (if they don’t release the manga, that is
)
But normally people don’t have this much drama in their lives… Well maybe some people do, but not in such a young age. They are waaaay too serious and dramatic at times, in my opinion. But of course it also made the show more exiting. It wouldn’t have been Bokura ga Ita without the drama ^_^
a~nd the soundtracks were great!! Love Jun Abe!
this is one anime that really surprised me to the heart…i can’t even believe it brought tears to my eyes…
being a late 20’s male having watched a lot of animes, this took me completely by surprise…the way the story is brought with total open honesty and makes one look back at the time when you had your first true love…
i’m definitely convincing my girlfriend to watch this ^_^
this anime rocks…
this anime really meant a lot to me…
i learned so much..from this
especially about heartaches…
the funny thing is
i remembr my ex-bf….from this anime..
he’s just like motoharu….
the story itself..is like..
my story too..
i just love this…so much..
i hope…the season2..will be a blast too…
i hope it will be aired soon…^_^
wow this anime is so beautiful anime i’d ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most realistic anime i’ve ever watched. Slow paced but it’s so sentimental n sad that it engrosses u to carry on watching. Romance shoujo full of emotional drama that the audience can relate to n realy feel for the characters. Love encompases feelings of all sorts including happiness, sadness, frustration, jealousy, angst, confusion, dreams, etc. Every ep is bound to pull a string in ur heart.
you’re definitely right ’bout that men…i got so engrossed watching it i didn’t know i was already crying! it was soo damn great it can evenly match kareshi kanojo no jijou(one of my favorites also) i heard somewhere that its season 2 will be aired this coming june 2008 in japan… the sad part is, where it took off of the ending on season 1, it came down straight at the manga’s season 2, obviously they’ll be using it as their plot.. i heard that the beginning parts of it are rather more dramatic… with Yano forgetting about his past even Nana-chan, and Nana-chan giving up on Yano..oh well, its such a popular shoujo manga, it should have a beautiful, beautiful heck of an ending…*3* i hope so! i’m keeping my fingers crossed!
omi Gosh i cant stand watching bokura ga ita but I also want to see season two cause it would solve my anger cause its good but im disapointed
,,,ia ma now addicted to this anime,,
esp to those soundtracks,,
and i also recommend you to watch the another anime w/c so called :i love my lil sister
Just finished watching the anime and definitely up in my fav’s list. It wasn’t an anime that started off particually dramatic, and almost though i’ll give up on it.
The anime ends pretty much at the end of Volume8 of the manga. Volume 9 onwards deals with them 5 years on, when Takahashi is graduating etc. Then in Vol10 theres a flashback to Yano and his new Tokyo life as well as some unexpected and expected things that happened. Jshojo is scanlating Volts9-12 if your looking to continue by reading the manga.
omg this amine was so good i was so addicted to it loll the end was sooo sad i cryed soo much at the end i wish they are gonna make more
the first time you watch its not interested, but when you listen carefully and watch then you understand the story, honestly i love this story very much, this is the fist time i cried for, im not satisfied the end of the story, hope they will see each other again, im crazy for the season 2 hope it will come, i like also the character of the guy, its vert touching, i understand his feeling, hehehe, i will rate this one for five star, its very nice story i love it very much, waiting for season 2, keep on good work, good luck.
wow! ganda talaga ng bokura ga ita,.kakaadik pati soundtracks, tugmang tugma talaga sa kwento..cant wait for season 2 sa anime, i get really frustrated whenever i think that yano might not have a happy ending with nanami…haaay. well basta it’s a really nice story,, great! hehe
